STEKLOVATA

i stumbled upon russian tween boy band steklovata while searching 'boy band' in youtube, and i still can't believe they are actually for real! it blows my mind.  the snazzy sweaters, wrangler t-shirt, and frosted tips only add to their appeal.  the songs are actually really really catchy and the background imagery is dazzling, especially the random english phrase 'we don't like it' floating around in the second video. i can't get 'novi novi novi novi god' out of my head!

RADIORAMA

striped pants girl has created some crazy ass dance/pose hybrid. she takes it so seriously - when she throws her head back it kills me. the set for the 'aliens' live video is so authentically outer-planetary that im surprised radiorama didn't wear their best disco spacesuits for the performance. also, their pronunciation of aliens sounds like 'ahhhliens.' the 'vampires' video is a bit more mysterious, with layers of colored fog masking the vampires that never actually appear. i tried to find an old video for their song 'yeti' on youtube but no dice, no biggie.

KEYBOARDS IN SPACE

i love this clip of 'jabdah' by koto.  hopping like a baby rabbit while playing the keyboard in a karate outfit surrounded by slo-moving astronauts is quite a feat. i wish i could find a full length clip on youtube but whatevs, i included a casio keyboard commercial from 1986 as a bonus.  i love when he goes flying past the moon while playing his keyboard. 'this isn't just a synthesizer, oh no, it's a rocket launcher!'

LIL SUZY

lil suzy isn't so lil anymore in the first video, but she was lil when she started in the music biz.  the beginning of 'when i fall in love' makes me laugh because it's so bad and so much cheese all at once.  the interlude of the guy talk-singing behind the fence is a song element that is practically required for 90s club jams. her asian-inspired outfit in front of the bridge is so misplaced that it's hilarious. oh lil suzy.

PROUD TO BE LOUD

jim gillette's scream video is probably the best 8 seconds of video ever. my favorite part is at the end when he pulls the microphone to the side and makes that face. HILAR! he was also part of a hair band called nitro that was pretty hilarious as well. his layering of belts in the 'cat scratch fever' video is quite skilled.

HOOKED ON THE HOFF

in case you were wondering, yes david hasselhoff had an illustrious singing career and yes, he made numerous groundbreaking music videos to accompany his songs.  'hooked on a feeling' is perhaps one of the most inventive music videos of all time - the plot involves the hoff as an inuit snowboarding along the frozen landscape, singing in a tuxedo above a dancefloor of waiters saying ooga chakka, singing by a muddy pond in some kind of fisherman/hunter outfit with flying angels, having a jumping contest with african boys, spinning video boxes on a train,  flying amongst seagulls in the sky, and standing on and flying from the handlebars of a moving motorcycle. just incredible. 'crazy for you' is more of a standard motorcycle jam until his pet dachshund traps him on a roller coaster ride! im guessing he really likes dachshunds because they are randomly placed throughout 'hooked on a feeling' as well.  the hoff is a complicated man and watching these videos gives us but a glimpse into his beautiful world.

leila k is one tough cookie from... sweden! she's got a certain chola-ness going on. i don't really understand why a music video called 'open sesame' takes place in some underground medieval lair. but whatevs it still rulez. zongazon zongazon gazev!

TWENTY 4 SEVEN

twenty 4 seven knows that dancing in front of primary colored backgrounds with flashing words is always a good concept for a video!! 'slave to the music' fashion concept = denim on denim and vest worn without shirt. and the touching ballad 'oh baby!' demonstrates that mini braids framing the face is a classy and tasteful way to show emotion. talk-singing never sounded so good.

THIS IS THE HARMONIC KISS

PhotobucketPhotobucket

the first video is hilarious but also quite disturbing.  tran quang hai and bach yen are two very spiritual but funky peeps.  check his youtube channel to see like 300 videos of him creating weird sounds in weird places and with weird people.  there's even a video of him having a spoon music battle with another spoon master.  the weirdness never ends.

SWEET MICKY

ou la la sweet micky!  check his bootleg double dare t-shirt.  the song in the forest is actually kind of amazing and hypnotic.  and it makes me want to gather up all of my friends and have a dance party in the forest in crop tops and ac slater pants.
